Benchmark Tournament Summary

by Archive

Last week we tested our platform of running weekly tournaments with the UKCSGO Benchmark Tournament and, dare I say, it was very successful. We learnt a lot from the evening on how we can improve the flow of the night, but the main test was on the performance of the servers and to see if we needed any more power. Thanks to the amazing support of CRISPsrv we have overcome the issues we faced in the County Championship last year.

The night was also a success that it caught the attention of some potential sponsors, so these weekly fun tournaments will hopefully end up having some virtual prizes to give teams that extra motivation.

We also wanted to test our new production setup which Jordan “Misty” Johnson had been working hard on perfecting.

What’s going to change?

It would be pointless if we ran this tournament and didn’t take anything away from it, because the night didn’t run as smoothly as it could have done.

  1. eBot – We are going to continue to use eBot, but we are going to work on stablising the issue we faced on the night with it timing out and disrupting one of the games.
  2. Check-in – We are going to move the check-in time to 30 minutes earlier and close it 30 minutes before the first game. This will give us time to setup all the games in eBot which took longer than expected.
  3. Seeding/match generation – We jumped the gun a bit in releasing seedings and generating the matches for the first round which caused some issues. In future events theses will be done after check-in is closed so we know exactly who is taking part.
  4. Weekly schedule – We have had a good look at what day we should run our weekly cups on and have settled on making Thursdays being the regular day. We could move this day about if there is a clash with other events or LANs.
  5. Admin communication – We have added a bot to the Discord server so you can now type !admin to ping and admin. This makes it easier for you to get the attention of an admin, rather than picking an admin at random to message, you can alert them all and wait for one to get in touch with you. This will speed up the response time of our admins and means you won’t me messaging an admin who could be afk. When using the !admin command, make sure you don’t type anything afterwards else the command won’t work.
  6. Discord bot – We will be adding other commands to the bot over time. You can use !help to see a list of the commands it currently has.

So there’s the plan. For now we are going to keep the tournaments as 16 teams as it is a manageable number for a one night cup. On a regular night check-in will move from 6pm to 5:30pm and close again at 6:30pm ready for a 7pm start. A game from each round will be cast on the UKCSGO hitbox channel along with results on all the other matches too.

Stay tuned as our next tournament date will be announced soon!
