ECS Finals – Day Three: Semi-Finals

by Archive

We’re into the final day of ECS in Wembley and first up today will be the two semi-finals to determine the final. First up was G2 heading up against fnatic and then surprise package TSM facing off against Luminosity.

Up first was Overpass, and it’s safe to say there was only one immense force in this map. G2 took the pistol and then continued on to go 8-0 against the Swedes where they then dropped a round thanks to JW showing some skill to finally put them into the game. However, G2 decided to disagree as they went on, taking all but one more round on the way to the half – going in 13:2. The Frenchmen kept their immense form to the end, as they finished up 16:2, with strong performances from shox, RpK and ScreaM (all going over 100 ADR throughout the map).

The next map in this series was set to be Dust 2, a map that was much closer. fnatic started the game strong, picking up the first three, and then only losing one more in the road to going 8:1 up. G2 did manage to answer back however, but olofmeister was back on the way to a strong 9:6 half in favour of the Swedes. Second half was a different story, however, as G2 turned on the gas from the fifth round onwards as they brought themselves to an eight round streak and, after dropping one round, took the map 16:13 and the series 2:0. This meant the French side were to be the first side into the Grand Finals later today.

In the opposing semi-final, TSM and LG were set to face up on Overpass. The Brazilians kicked off on the CT side and rolled through the North American side, taking six rounds before any sort of answer was returned. But 6:3 shortly became 12:3 as LG kept to most expectations and took them hard to the half, TSM failing to plant on occasion part of the problem for them. The second half would be wins for LG, even though TSM came extremely close to victory on multiple occasions as rounds went down to the seconds (including a round where SEMPHIS narrowly missed out by half a second to take a round). LG were steadfast and took the map 16:3, setting them up strong for their next map.

The second map was to be Cobblestone, home of many of TSM’s upsets this event. Ping-pong was the order for the start as LG took the pistol before TSM answered back straight away for the second, but the Brazilians were strong. They took the next four without answer, but TSM managed to get three on the trot to help them along to a more stable footing in the half. LG managed a couple before TSM started a strong run to the half, as the Americans claimed the final four rounds to take a slim advantage into the second half at 8:7. The second half was a strong one for TSM, even if the pistol went to the wire, but the following rounds kept them going strong. LG answered back with three strong rounds of their own, before a bit of ping-pong helped them even it out at 13:13 each. LG then took themselves to map point but TSM refused to capitulate just yet, as it went all the way to 16:14 and LG took the series 2-0.

This makes the final a heated match-up between G2 and Luminosity Gaming, set to kick-off at 8pm over on FACEIT’s Twitch page. Don’t miss it!
