In the second of our brand new “hype machine” interviews going into the biggest LAN of the year, the height of the Summer LAN season, insomnia58. This new series will explore the usual suspects who are gunning for glory in both the UK Masters Finals & at the main event insomnia58. We shall also be exploring some of the more “unknowns” in the scene with a few teams pinned for “interesting storylines” that are currently developing within the scene and online portion of league play for example. It won’t strictly be a “top player” affair, but we will try to shed the limelight on those outside the British Elite group to give our readers an insight into the growing depth of talent within our scene.
We managed to catch up with one of the more charismatic personalities in the UK CS:GO Scene, known for his AWPing in the lower echelons of the scene, and his outrageous outbursts at LAN, and the fact he loves calling various people “Jiggly heads”, it is Miran “SpeedyG” Hoyle who instead of what we have become accustom to in representing Perilous, will actually be representing The Last Resort at insomnia58.
Miran has been around for a very long time in the UK Counter-Strike scene, one of the few original members of Perilous Gaming (which later went on to become called Perilous Fury), he has often been one of the few players in the “fringe” elements of the UK scene and has a wealth of experience of helping others out. Often known for his talents with the AWP and his dust2 predatory powers, he has been to many iSeries tournaments, and come as high as 5th/6th and of course at the most recent epic.LAN (epic.EIGHTEEN) event he managed a career best of 2nd place with Perilous Fury, a bit of a mix team. That team later has since become The Last Resort and with Miran on board they hope to fly high at insomnia58.
How confident are you about your team’s chances at i58? where are you realistically looking to finish?
We are pretty confident about at least making our seed at insomnia58, we have worked hard for it but of course anything could happen.
Is there any team you’re not prepared for, a dark horse you think can reach top 8?
I don’t really know a lot about the unknown teams, it could surely be some good unknown teams that will surprise anyone, but usually it is hard for them to get through group stages and I don’t really think it will be any different at insomnia58.
What are your thoughts on mix teams entering and winning LANs like we saw Rasta.Infused do at i57?
There have always has been mix teams entering LANs but for a mix team to win it, it will have to be players from top UK teams that are playing together. I don’t think that any team that is going and doing a mix just for fun and are not from any known teams will even make it out of group stages.
In your opinion, who’s the star player on your team, what do they bring to the table?
I think that my team has a lot of potential, that everyone has something to bring to the team and it is difficult to choose only the one “star player”. But if we look at recent achievements I think that Dudley was sick at his last event and that he has a lot to give after winning ESL UK Premiership [with The Working Men].
What’s the team chemistry like outside of the game, do you get along well?
Outside of the game there is lots of banter and good vibes with each other and good chemistry overall, but when it comes to playing we are of course focused when it is needed and work good as a team as any team should be if they are serious about competing.
Your team was recently picked up by The Last Resort, how long had the team been together before then?
The team was actually formed when we got picked up by The Last Resort even though me and Adam [AliG] was playing with each other in a mixed team at epic.EIGHTEEN, Dudley and Hoodlum used to play with each other in a past team and so did AliG with Paynt. So at some point in their career some of the boys played with each other in past teams so we thought why not.
What is your perspective on LAN prices, with Multiplay jacking up the BYOC price to £99 this time around, can this potentially cause teams to skip insomnia and focus on other stuff?
It might get to the point when only the serious teams will participate and maybe fewer mixed teams and unknown teams would participate. But since Insomnia is one of the biggest LANs there is in the UK I don’t think that anyone that is really competitive would just skip the event and only participate in online tournaments it wouldn’t make any sense, that’s just my view on it.
How has your online performance been so far? Do you think you can stay consistent on LAN?
When we have had the chance to play with each other we are relatively good but we don’t play UK teams much just because of certain opinions within the team so it’s hard to match it up with a UK team, but we are comfortable to do well however this is CS:GO anything can happen as players we have all been consistent at LAN and haven’t choked so we don’t intend on starting now.
You’ve been around the scene for a while, how have things changed from when you first started playing to today? Is there anything you’d like to see happen within UK CS?
The scene has improved for sure compared to the Cadred days if you are saying about behaviour wise when the old Milk Float Mandem was around. For sure things have changed and somethings will never change but that’s the UK scene I am happy to be in it and won’t trade it in for anything for sure. It’s just how we are, there is always drama no matter what scene you are in we just don’t see the other drama in different scenes cause we are too concentrated on our scene just my opinion I guess.
Have you ever thought about joining an European team? Do you think it’d lead to more success than you would get in a UK team?
Joining an European team I have never thought of, but I do have European friends for sure. I feel like it could be a good thing or can be a bad thing like us English people speak fast! Well not all but some as I am one of those people who can speak a little bit fast it might be a communication issue with Europeans so I tend to leave that for another time or in the future who knows what that holds.
When is Adam “Blanks” Heath joining the roster after his weekly cup performance?
Mr Blanks always has a spot ready as an 8th in the team he is always in our hearts! haha #Gumpster (jiggly head we call him) being the 7th for sure hahaha
For reference, here is The Last Resort and their insomnia58 lineup:
Miran “SpeedyG” Hoyle
