Student Gaming Championships

by Flakes

It’s the time of year where students begin to fall back into the daily routines of essays and lectures, as well as preparing themselves for the year ahead. This year, however, is soon to be somewhat different for those looking to keep their edge on the competitive scene. This is thanks to the recently announced second season of the Student Gaming Championship, a league that aims to bridge the gap between education and competitive gaming.

It was only last October that we saw the first iteration of the SGC which featured a game pool consisting of some of the most prominent eSports titles, including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. It was something of a rather successful launch for a unique concept within the UK, consisting of over 30 teams from schools and colleges within Counter-Strike alone. The successful launch was also supported by the shout-casting that was provided by the league. As expected with any brand new event nothing was quite perfect however since learning from the small mistakes within Season 1, they are pushing for a successful start to the year with Season 2.

So after looking into their past, now onwards to the future! Season 2 bolsters a large variety of games from CSGO to Smite, those being only two of a healthy list of titles. Each game has its own league attached with one match being played a week with each match accumulating points within the league allowing for competitive standings. On top of all of this the league will be supporting up to a capacity of 150 teams (Within CS) which allows for a large pool of competition.

Overall, Its a great attempt at bringing a brand new concept to the UK Scene for not only Counter Strike but other games alike. So, go out and represent your School, University or College and run for pride and bragging rights around the younger ages of the scene. More information is available on their website to learn more as well as begin the steps to registering your side, the deadline for registration is Monday 1st February at 2:00 PM.
