Thomas: “I’ve had this dream since 2015.”

In a post-match interview with UKCSGO, ITB's IGL had a heartfelt chat about making CS:GO history.

Into the Breach have etched their names into the history books for CS:GO. The first UK-majority team to make it to this stage at a Major. They are joined by fnatic and GamerLegion as they wave the British flag high among the intense competition, and can walk away from their first RMR as a team with their heads held high.

UKCSGO’s Matthew “meffew” Godsell sat down with Thomas “Thomas” Utting after their intense best-of-three against B8 to discuss the outcome of the match, and to try and glean an insight into the raw emotions the squad are feeling after their historic victory in Copenhagen.

You’ve just made history. First UK core to reach a major… what are your feelings right now?

Yeah, feeling… happy.

You’ve now earned a sticker in game too, someone mentioned that your signature was rejected?

Yeah, I actually don’t have a sticker at the moment, so I’ll have to upload one later. But yeah, they terminated the sticker I’ve had for years, they said it wasn’t allowed.

Making the Major… how does it feel to do it alongside CRUC1AL? You’ve played with him for years at this point.

Me and Joey [CRUC1AL], we’ve crumbled so many times. Stockholm… we’ve always been playing and we were never able, in Endpoint, to do it. Something just didn’t click right. We faced unfortunate events all the time, I don’t blame anyone in the team though. Kia [Surreal], Max [MiGHTYMAX], we could’ve easily done it, but I think we just never had the run. The golden chemistry to do it… I don’t know. We always consistently played well, but we never had that finesse. But this team, it really came into fruition at this event. I don’t know what else to say… we built this team, we’ve changed a lot, we’ve gone through the hardships, we’ve united as a team, and we played as a team. We’ve had brilliant support from the org to really be able to do this.

UKCSGO have interviewed a couple of your teammates about this, they’ve mentioned how despite the youth of this team, everything just clicked, right?

It didn’t really, originally. At the start we went on a nice winstreak, but we weren’t playing good CS. Once we really dived into it, me and Juve, we spoke a lot. We spoke to rallen and all the players, we were able to adapt and fix things. Everyone started getting really comfortable, so I’m just really proud of the boys, honestly.

Everyone else is super proud of you guys too! Obviously you’ve had some doubters along the way, I saw you replied to NaToSaphiX’s tweet yesterday…

To be honest, I know that NaTo and his team were originally meant to be joining ITB, but Sam [ITB’s owner] pulled the plug on it for… reasons. I don’t know much about that, Sam trusted me to build the team. I spoke to him, explained that I’m going to convert to being an IGL, a lot of people had a lot of doubt in me, a lot of doubt. But I think now, I’ve proven that I wasn’t only this guy who could just run around and shoot heads… that’s what a lot of people said. I think now, I’m quite established and I’m learning a lot. I’m still learning, and it’ll take time, but the team has full trust in me. And I have full trust in my coach, who has been helping me a lot.

Amazing. Do you have any final words?

Thanks for all the support boys, I can’t believe a UK team has made a Major. I’ve had this dream since 2015. I’ve been grinding, grinding, lineups just haven’t managed to make it, I’ve always went with UK teams when I could… but we’ve finally done it. We finally have a team representing the UK, which just makes me… almost tear up.
