ESL & Dreamhack move to change Rules.

by Archive

Both ESL and Dreamhack have announced recently some moves to change certain rules around things in all their competitions (including any UK related events they may wish to host including ESL UK Premiership). This move has come from an array of different things including Valve introducing the round times changing at the back end of 2015. The other source of hot topics also include the 6 second deathcam which has lately been a subject close to people’s hearts on the CS:GO Subreddit.

ESL were the first to announce the rule changes last Friday, many of which expected the round times to change and bomb time to also follow suit. The other notable additions was the end of round changes which is usually around 6 seconds, but has been changed and shortened to only 3 seconds, which could cause all kinds of issues when trying to get a weapon upgrade. However this change may benefit those teams trying to save weapons. The deathcam change was the most significant which is solely based on community feedback through the usual places such as reddit. It has been a hot topic for the last six months saying that it is completely unnecessary but pro’s have yet to complain around this issue, and it has been a staple of Counter-Strike for a very very long time. The change is to be shortened from six seconds to only two seconds. This really adds some immediate depth to the game as you will no longer be able to tell your teammates where a player is heading.

Dreamhack followed suit on Sunday evening, thus confirming all current changes as major event organisers try to keep the rules globally tight and in line with everyone.

List of changes are as follows:

Round and bomb timers
The round and bomb timer will be updated as at the end of last year Valve announced that they would change them for all upcoming Valve-supported events (Minors and Majors). To keep them unified across all tournaments we’ll be updating them to the new values. New round time will be 1:55 and the new bomb timer 0:40.

Deathcam
There were quite a few discussions about the deathcam within the last months in the community. After we internally discussed those changes as well as talking about them with players we agreed that it would be time to shorten the deathcam. Therefore we’ll shorten it down to 2 seconds.

End of the round delay
We are also going to change the delay after a new round starts once a round is completed, this will be shorten to 3 seconds.

Jumpthrow scripts will be forbidden
The last change will be the addition of Jumpthrow to the list of forbidden scripts. We have gathered feedback from players and after a voting the results were quite in favor of banning it which we now do.

For our Intel Extreme Masters World Championship Katowice qualifiers on ESEA, those new settings are already in place for the qualifiers this weekend. For all other ESL leagues and tournaments we’ll implement and update our configs and game integration starting Monday, 18th of January 2016 at 11:00 CET.

It would be worth noting for any teams heading to epic.LAN, that the Round & Bomb timers and jumpthrow scripts are as the ESL & DH rules. The Deathcam/end of round delay won’t be in place at epic.LAN next month. The ESL rules apply globally including ESL UK related events with the expected UK Premiership soon to kick off again.

It will be interesting to see how various teams from top of Europe to the bottom of the UK Scene will be able to handle these significant changes.
