GAMEFACE hosted another one of its online Cash Cups again with a total prize pool of almost £200. For unfamiliar readers, this gives the chance for smaller teams as well as big ones to go head to head and claim a potential 1st (£131.25), 2nd (£37.50) and 3rd place (£18.75) prize. Again, we saw many UK teams take part which was great to see.
For those of you who are unaware, the tournament consists of 4 groups each containing around 4 teams, who play through several B01 stages of the tournament until the top two best teams come head-to-head in a BO3 final. Some well-known names took part again, including team Girls Generation and PerilousFURY along with some smaller less-known teams from the UK.
After a frenzy of knockouts, it came down to the semi-finals between PerilousFURY and Girls Generation (both UK teams) with Girls Generation coming out on top, securing them a place in the final. It was a close 12 – 16 scoreline on de_dust2 but with a dominating performance from Yan “inkzoo” Chan with a grand 31 kills and only 13 deaths. This led to the eventual win for Girls Generation giving them a shot for the 1st place prize. On the other side, we saw 2 EU Mix teams under the names of n0N0oon0 and STEROIDS. This ended at 16-10 to team n0N0oon0 but had more balanced individual performances it seems with the majority of players fragging around the 20 mark on both sides.
This meant the BO3 final was between Girls Generation and team n0N0oon0. After a veto selection the maps came down to de_dust2, de_mirage and then finally de_overpass if needed. The first map saw team n0N0oon0 take the win 16-8 giving them a 1-0 lead, but in the 2nd map the teams battled into an overtime which saw Girls Generation defend their place ending at a 19-16 scoreline. A tense final map unfortunately saw Girls Generation get knocked out, making team n0N0oon0 the champions of the tournament and winning that 1st place prize. A great final to see with it being so close.
The finalised results are as follows:
1st place : n0N0oon0 – CYTAROo, Pinhead, v1N, DdMdylan, haaSKING (EU Mix)
2nd place : Girls Generation – SHaRp, rennyS, jak3y, GnagarN, Kazuki (UK)
3rd place: Unknown, According to the website there needs to be a reschedule for the lower bracket final.
Even with another win from an EU Mixed team it was great to see the smaller UK teams participate and hopefully soon we will see more wins from a local side. These tournaments are a good way to test out your team even before going to any LANs and can really make the difference as they are a good way to improve all aspects of a team especially when facing potentially higher-skilled opponents.
