GEEKZ roster has disbanded following the expiry of their contracts with the organisation. The players parted ways with the organisation on Monday, with coach Andreas “addi” Wallberg confirming the disband in a Tweet on Thursday. The international combine, headed by UK players Edgaras “entz” Luksas and Kyle “swaggy” Wilson, were signed in April having previously competed as ROYALS, but the team have gone their separate ways after a disappointing ESEA season.
Optimism was high when the team were signed, being the first org home for swaggy’s Royals in 594 days and with a team that was considered on the rise in the scene despite the mid-season exit of John “Dutchy” Holland. Not long after they were signed, however, the changes began. The team parted ways with the recently added Sean “Atrox” Greene and Xavier “xavi” Sebrok just days after the ink dried on their GEEKZ contracts, replacing them with Erik “truth” Hansen Dyrnes and Sander Nordeide “Grus” Iversen (with the UK-based Ersin “ERSIN” Chiriac joining them for ESL Premiership games).
As if the changes weren’t enough, the driving force behind the roster’s formation, swaggy, then announced his retirement from CS:GO citing lack of motivation. He would play out the rest of the season with the squad, but the chemistry of the team was clearly shattered as the team’s form dipped.
Unfortunately if he had been hoping to go out on a high, he would not get his wish. In ESEA Advanced, the team achieved just a single win in the server, and their record was only extended to 3-11 by some fortuitous forfeits. They also finished 5th in Group A of ESL Premiership Spring 2023 behind Dutchy’s Next in Line Esports, with just 3 wins to their name. This was a far cry from Royals’ 5th-6th finish the previous season. They only played one other event under the GEEKZ banner, Phoenix / Lucifer League Season 12, where they finished in 3rd place.
Outside of swaggy retiring, it is not known what the players or coach addi will do next. All the players were seen playing the Gamers8 Last Chance Qualifier. entz played the event in a mix with AWPer Timothy “tvs” Sjogren and addi, from which they were unfortunately eliminated in the second round. truth and grus found more success with former Endpoint rifler Robin “robiin” Sjogren as their mix 1ADL took down MOUZ in the round of 64 before elimination at the hands of ex-HYDRA.
UKCSGO reached out to The Head of CS:GO at GEEKZ to discuss the team’s future. He said:
“Of course we will stick to CS! In the future, we want to continue to focus on working with young talent. Very soon we will be able to present a new main team. At the same time, we want to set up an academy project that can further develop talents in order to bring them into the main team later on.
Unfortunately, no player will come from the UK area, but we continue to keep a close eye on the UK scene and its talents. Hopefully we can welcome players from there in one of our teams in the future!”
Keep an eye out for more news regarding the players soon.
